Settings of biospheric dose assessment parameters in safety assessment for final repository of short-lived radioactive waste in Sweden

In order to extract the knowledge that will be helpful in setting the biospheric dose assessment parameters and their database for safety assessment of radioactive waste disposal in Japan, a methodology of setting the biospheric dose assessment parameters was surveyed in the safety assessment of the radioactive waste disposal in Sweden. In this study, the handling in the biospheric dose assessment in SR-PSU was specifically focused. SR-PSU was the project about the safety assessment for final repository of short-lived radioactive waste in Sweden, SFR.

Development of a design support system for geological disposal of radioactive waste using a CIM concept

This paper presents status of development of the iSRE (integrated system for repository engineering) as a design supporting system that enables rational designing of a geological disposal repository. The complimentary technique of construction information modeling/management (CIM) has been employed for the development of iSRE. CIM uses a shared three dimensional (3D) model of associated data through common data models. In this paper, as a design support system that conforms to the characteristics of information management about engineering technology represented by repetition of design during the disposal project period, we examined and designed the function of the "iSRE", constructed a prototype, and confirmed the function through a trial simulating actual work in the disposal project. As a result, with respect to the functions of DB and IF of the iSRE, we got a prospect that these functions can be the foundation of information management on engineering technology, and development of the prototype of the iSRE and its test run extracted issues for practical use of such system.

Sharing information of scientific research results on the Internet have developed in the global advancement of the open science today, such as archiving and disseminating scientific papers on institutional repositories, facilitating access to and use of research data etc. Accessibility to those contents in large volumes of information on the Internet is very important issue. Those contents might be grey literature without solving this accessibility issue. This presentation introduces the case study of the Japan Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA) Library as an example of efforts to improve circulation of research results in terms of grey literature. JAEA has disseminate information of our research results through the JAEA Originated Papers Searching System (JOPSS) on the Internet over decade, but we have three main issues to solve aiming at improving the accessibility of grey literature in the open science era; (1) to ensure accessibility of our Internet contents, (2) to consider how our target users find our contents, (3) to improve user interface of contents. We will continue to improve the system aiming to distribute various information of JAEA R&D results.

Extending water retention curves to a quasi-saturated zone subjected to a high water pressure up to 1.5 Megapascals

In the Groundwater Recovery Experiment in Tunnel which is underway at the MIU, water saturation is one of the key parameters to monitor in order to understand the recovery processes. In this study, the process of saturation increase in the quasi-saturated zone where trapped discrete air phase affects saturation due to further increase in water pressure was studied. The relationship between the positive water pressure and saturation was measured by laboratory test using sands with trapped air bubbles and the effect of compression of bubbles on the changes in saturation was analyzed. The experimental results showed that the water pressure-saturation curves closely followed the relationship estimated solely based on the air bubble compression using Boyle's law. Based on this observation, a mathematical model was established to define the water pressure - saturation curve for the region where the water pressure is positive.

This paper presents status of development of the iSRE (integrated system for repository engineering) as a design supporting system that enables rational designing of a geological disposal repository. The complimentary technique of construction information modeling/management (CIM) has been employed for the development of iSRE. CIM uses a shared three dimensional (3D) model of associated data through common data models. The contents of this paper are the goal of the development, design requirements and required functions, the basic structure of iSRE. The main databases of the iSRE could then be designed with an interface to coordinate with external systems and other databases. Some of the databases and the interfaces were trialed and a data model was then built. A scenario of iSRE operation was also created and the applicability of iSRE using a data model was also examined. Thanks to the use of the existing software, the development process could be conducted while solving problems for realistic test cases. The prospect of the development of the iSRE for geological disposal projects was realized and the iSRE was confirmed as being a useful tool for designing a repository.

Geologic disposal of radioactive waste produced by application of partitioning-transmutation technology to nuclear fuel cycle

The effects of partitioning-transmutation (PT) technology to waste management was assessed based on the chemical and physical properties and estimated amounts of radioactively contaminated wastes that may be generated in the JAERI's PT cycle. The volume of high-level waste after partitioning was about a third that of non-partitioned vitrified waste form. The required repository area was about sixth, which implies increase in capacity of geologic repositories.

Parametric survey on possible impact of partitioning and transmutation of high-level radioactive waste

The benefit of implementing Partitioning and Transmutation (P&T) of high-level wastes was parametrically surveyed. The possible reduction of the geological repository area was estimated. By recycling minor actinides (MA), the repository area required for unit spent fuel was reduced significantly in the case of MOX-LWR. This effect was caused by removal of $$^{241}$$Am which is a long-term heat source. By partitioning the fission products, in addition to MA recycling, further 70-80% reduction from the MA-recovery case can be expected for both UO$$_2$$ and MOX. This significant reduction was independent of the cooling time before the partitioning process.

Reduction and resource recycling of high-level radioactive wastes through nuclear transmutation; Impact of nuclear transmutation on disposal of high-level radioactive waste

In the ImPACT project, transmutation technology of long-lived fission products (LLFPs) is being developed in addition to minor actinides (MAs) transmutation studied in other programs. If MAs, LLFPs, and heat-generating fission products (FPs), which are Sr-90 and Cs-137, are removed from high-level waste (HLW), drastic benefit is anticipated on the disposal of HLW. In the present study, we tried to estimate two impacts through transport analysis of radionuclide: (1) disposal of the waste after transmutation in the deep underground repository designed for the conventional HLW, and (2) disposal of the waste after transmutation in the intermediate depth disposal designed for the low level radioactive wastes such as hull and end-pieces of the spent fuel assembly. As the result, the reduction of public dose in analysis (1) was observed, and the dose was enough small in analysis (2).

The study measured public acceptance depending on the area of personal relevance, and the general and personal consensus toward a geological repository. The results that the weaker area of personal relevance, the stronger public acceptance became. The NIMBY reaction to siting a repository was strong. However, the effect of area of personal relevance was mitigated in the scenario where a scientific approach was applied.

Oxidative uranium dissolution from UO$$_{2}$$ in the presence of adsorbed phthalic acid

Contact of water with spent nuclear fuel is anticipated in scenarios of failure of the repository system for the direct disposal of spent fuel. Upon the direct contact of water, the UO$$_{2}$$ matrix of the fuel is expected to gradually dissolve due to oxidation of uranium by the action of ionizing radiation. In this study, we examined effects of organic acid on the UO$$_{2}$$ dissolution by using phthalic acid as a model compound. We investigated oxidation of UO$$_{2}$$ by exposure to H$$_{2}$$O$$_{2}$$ in aqueous solution containing phthalic acid. Significant adsorption of phthalic acid on UO$$_{2}$$ was observed. The coverage of the surface was estimated to reach 80 %. The H$$_{2}$$O$$_{2}$$-exposure experiments revealed that adsorbed phthalic acid has no significant effect on the redox reaction by H$$_{2}$$O$$_{2}$$ on the UO$$_{2}$$ surface, despite the high surface density. H$$_{2}$$O$$_{2}$$ oxidation of UO$$_{2}$$ with adsorbed phthalic acid resulted in U dissolution to similar extents with the U dissolution measured in aqueous bicarbonate solutions.
